What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a silent disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue making bones more fragile and increasing risk for fracture.

How common is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis affects 25 million Americans and results in 1.5 million fractures annually at an estimated cost of 10 billion dollars. Approximately 15% of women over age 50 have Osteoporosis. Up to 25% of fractures lead to death in 1 year.

How is Osteoporosis treated?
Preventin is the best way to defend against osteoporosis in later life. To optimize bone health:
  • eat a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
  • perform weight bearing exercises
  • lead a healthy life style, no smoking, limit alcohol intake
  • bone density testing

There is no cure for osteoporosis, but there are medication for postmenopausal women to treat osteoporosis.
